I am not a big fan of red meat so for the past few years I have tended to stay away from making hamburgers. I wanted a change from creating dishes featuring chicken breasts as the protein and when I saw ground turkey at the store I decided that I was finally going to make a delicious burger! I have decided (and Steve agrees) that this burger is not only just as good as any burger made with beef, but it’s even better! And it may be the middle of January, but we have had some 60 and 70 degree days this week so what a great opportunity to use the grill!
These are my four ingredient burgers; you don’t even need a binder so it’s easy to make them gluten free. Add some chopped onion, a can of diced green chiles, and fresh minced garlic to a package of ground turkey. Mix together with your hands and form 4 fairly large patties. I like to let them sit in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before putting on the grill as this helps the burgers stay together. It is important to clean and grease the grill so the burgers do not stick. We heat the grill on medium and put some olive oil on a paper towel and use that to rub on the grill before putting the burgers on.
I live by the assumption that cheese makes everything better so in this case I chose to add a different flavor of cheese to each burger, for tasting purposes of course (to make these dairy free, just omit the cheese). Results: every burger was cheesy and delicious, but the swiss was probably my favorite (cheddar and provolone ranked a close second and third). I have also made these burgers as sliders by just making 8 small patties instead of 4 large ones. These are great to serve as snacks and appetizers at a holiday or sports party. Don’t forget to lay out toppings for your burgers or sliders. I love some creamy avocado with crisp lettuce and ketchup. Or better yet try them with some homemade guacamole. Give these mouthwatering turkey burgers a shot, I promise you won’t miss the beef!
- 1 pound ground turkey
- 1/2 small yellow onion, chopped
- 1 garlic clove, minced
- 1 can hot green chiles
- salt and pepper
- 4 cheddar cheese slices
- 4 whole wheat buns
- avocado slices
- tomato slices
- lettuce/spinach
- mayo
- mustard
- ketchup
- bbq sauce
- Combine turkey, onion, garlic, chiles, salt & pepper in large bowl and mix with hands (do not overmix). Form into 4 large burgers (or 8 small sliders).
- Cover burgers with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
- Heat grill to medium heat. Use a paper towel with some olive oil to lightly grease grill before placing burgers down.
- Cook burgers about 8 minutes per side (flipping only once). If making sliders cook 5 minutes per side.
- For the last minute of cooking time place slices of cheese on each burger and allow to melt before removing from grill.
- Let burgers rest for a few minutes after grilling, then add toppings and enjoy.
- These can be great appetizers when made into sliders. Serve on small dinner rolls or cut-out round slices from toast.
